Dear All, Santal marriage has been explained .It is a good attempt. But, here Gonong should not be equated with a bride price.It is not a sale & purchase affair nor does the bride's father counts this as income.It has symbolic meaning deep rooted into the culture and values of the society.
Except duar itud sindur( tradition supposedly brought to santals by the so called jamindars & therefore appropriately also called as diku babla) all other marriage does have system of itud sindur in grooms house.Meaning after itud sindur the bride becomes a member of groom's family and therefore must first keep her foot on her new home.Only after the itud sindur she is entitled to do puja in the bhitar(home).
Santal & Adivasi cultures have no parallels.They are entirely on a different footing. Recently some groups started publishing popular magazine "Chanda mama" in Santali in OLCHIKI script. It was a good attempt but was a work of mere translation without culture. They retained the name "Chanda Mamo" in Santali also. It was not appreciated by the people and could not garner readership.Reason ; in Santali culture CHANDO is the GOD and not the maternal uncle as understood by Hindu traditions.The entire concept changes with CHANDO in Santali.

Very well researched and written.But certain changes are taking place in young educated Santals who have moved on to towns, cities and abroad.Some of them have and will find life partners outside their community by virtue of where they find themselves in this age of globalisation. The Santal customs and traditions do not normally allow such marriages and these youngsters are lost to the community which is rather sad and detrimental to the development and progress of the Santal people.
They should look around and see what's happening in the rest of the communities.There are more and more intercaste, international and inter-racial marriages now a days in the world and they seem to be happy and contented and acceptable in thier respective families and communities. The Santal community may have to look at them and examine them and perhaps learn from them. Charles Darwin, the famous philosopher and sceintist wrote "It is not strongest species that survive, nor most intelligent but ones responsive to change".
