I was in Rajasthan recently and heard of Madarsas where 150 to 200 girls, in one case as many as 800, are kept in a hall in one building, not allowed to go out even for an evening walk. They study, eat, sleep live in that hall. Visitors are allowed to talk to the boys in the boys madarsa next door, but not to the girls, who hang on to the railings of the window and look out at the world.. the best they can do. It breaks my heart that in the name of religious freedom we allow such severe violation of human rights.
Some months ago, I met a group of girls, dressed in saffron, who had been brought to delhi as a vacation for them, and were being paraded in well to do households... the household gave one meal to the girls, they sang devotional songs, and left... it was so terrible to see that this ashram in Orissa, which had a school where they brought girls from extreme poor households, especially from tribal regions as also north east, had not taught the girls much, thier learning levels were very low... and the school should have been challenged long ago.... They were not sexually exploited, but they were not taught well, and wore only saffron dresses....
It would be good if those of us who belive in uniform civil code, at least uniform educational standards make ourselves heard. How can we ensure that every child comes up with basic freedoms and quality education?
